Planet Nine

Planet Nine was built for long voyages with a helicopter on board: her steel hull came from a commercial shipyard in La Spezia, and The Italian Sea Group finished her at Marina di Carrara under the Admiral name. She was delivered in 2018 with a Lloyd's Register ice class, a commercial helideck and a hangar below it. She spent her first winter in Antarctica, appeared in Christopher Nolan's Tenet and has since cruised from Patagonia to Albania and the Maldives. After a 2026 refit she is back on the charter market, with winters in Mexico and Central America.

In short

Planet Nine's owner had her steel hull built at a commercial shipyard rather than a yacht builder, to Lloyd's Register Ice Class 1D, which Boat International says lets her handle sea ice up to about 15 cm thick (Boat International). She carries 340,000 litres of fuel for more than 10,000 nm at 10 knots, or more than 6,000 nm at her 14-knot cruising speed (Boat International). Her design is built around aviation: a commercial-standard helideck sits over a hangar reached by a lift, so she can carry two helicopters, and she has her own helicopter fuel (Boat International, Boat International). She went to Antarctica in her first winter, 2018–19 (YachtCharterFleet); her broker describes a trip there and back to the Mediterranean via the west coast of South America within one southern summer (Boat International), and by 2024 she had covered more than 115,000 nm (Boat International).

Questions

What makes Planet Nine an explorer yacht?
She has a Lloyd's Register ice-class steel hull, a range of more than 10,000 nm at 10 knots, about a month of fresh provisions and her own watermakers (Boat International). She also carries a helicopter in a hangar under a commercial helideck (Boat International).
What ice class does Planet Nine have?
Lloyd's Register Ice Class 1D (Boat International). Lloyd's rules define it as light first-year ice (Lloyd's Register), and Boat International puts her limit at sea ice about 15 cm thick (Boat International).
Can Planet Nine carry a helicopter?
Yes, two. The aft helideck is commercially approved, and a hydraulic lift lowers a helicopter into a hangar below it, so one can stay on deck while another is stowed (Boat International). She also carries helicopter fuel (Boat International).
Has Planet Nine been to Antarctica?
Yes. She first went there in the 2018–19 season, after her first Mediterranean charter summer (YachtCharterFleet), and her broker describes a trip to Antarctica and back to the Mediterranean via the west coast of South America within one southern summer (Boat International). Later trips with charter guests also went to Antarctica, and her owner cruised Patagonia (Boat International).
Is Planet Nine the yacht from Tenet?
Yes. She was used in Christopher Nolan's Tenet during an extended charter on the Amalfi Coast, where she stood in for Vietnam (Boat International).
Who owns Planet Nine, and can she be chartered?
Boat International reported in 2024 that Lord Nathaniel Rothschild owned her (Boat International) and in 2025 listed her among yachts rumoured to have been sold (Boat International). After a 2026 refit she is offered for charter for up to 12 guests (Fraser).
