Ragnar (now Q)

Ragnar began life in 2012 as Sanaborg, an icebreaking support vessel built by Royal Niestern Sander for offshore work in shallow, frozen water. Icon Yachts converted her into a 68.2-metre explorer to an RWD design between 2017 and 2020, keeping the icebreaking hull and Wärtsilä Icepod drives and adding a certified helideck, a garage for tenders and a submarine, and guest decks for 12. Sold in 2023 and renamed Q, she was refitted in 2025 with a longer swim platform and a new interior, and is offered for charter.

In short

Ragnar started out as a working icebreaker: as Sanaborg she was designed to make at least 4 knots through 0.6 metres of unbroken first-year ice and to break grounded ice ridges stern-first with her two Wärtsilä Icepod thrusters (Conoship International). Icon Yachts kept that hull and drive train and built a new superstructure with a certified helideck for an Airbus EC145, a garage for tenders and a three-seat submarine, and guest decks, adding about 900 gross tonnes (Boat International, SuperYacht Times). Her naval architect says she was converted to the Polar Code and Large Yacht Code 3 rules, but no public class register confirms her ice notation (Conoship International). Since her delivery in 2020 she has crossed from the Netherlands to Iceland, the Mediterranean and the Maldives, and as Q she was refitted in 2025 and offered for charter (Boat International, SuperYacht Times, Worth Avenue Yachts).

Builder
Royal Niestern Sander, Delfzijl, the Netherlands, which delivered her to Wagenborg Offshore as the icebreaking multipurpose support vessel Sanaborg on 3 February 2012. She was developed by the yard, Wagenborg and Conoship for offshore services in shallow water and Arctic conditions; Boat International writes that she was designed for the shallow Caspian Sea
Conversion
Icon Yachts, Harlingen. Sanaborg, laid up near the yard and never used in high latitudes according to SuperYacht Times, entered Icon's shed in July 2017. She was launched as Ragnar in January 2020, began sea trials in May 2020 and left the yard in June 2020. Conoship gives 7 January 2020 as the delivery date
Design
Exterior and interior of the conversion by RWD (Charlie Baker), styled after a medieval helmet; naval architecture and engineering of the new superstructure by Conoship International, which also designed Sanaborg. The 2025 interior is by Zuretti
Ice class
Ice-class hull, notation not published: she does not appear in the public Lloyd's Register, DNV or Bureau Veritas registers, and her class society is not confirmed by a register
In ice, in practice
As Sanaborg she was designed to make at least 4 knots in unbroken first-year ice 0.6 m thick and to break grounded ridges by washing them with her pods while going astern, which model tests checked in deep and shallow water. Her naval architect says the conversion followed the Polar Code and Large Yacht Code 3 (“Polar code 5”); SuperYacht Times describes her Wärtsilä pods as rated PC5, the IACS Polar Class for year-round operation in medium first-year ice. Press reports name the hull notation differently: “Ice Class 1A Super” (SuperYacht Times, 2019 and 2020), “ICE Class A1 super” (Boat International, 2020) and “ICE Class A1” (SuperYacht Times, 2020 and 2021). 1A Super is the Finnish-Swedish class for level ice up to 1.0 m thick, normally without icebreaker help. She is insulated and heated for −30 to +40 °C
Hull
Steel; a double hull with an air gap between the outer and inner shells
Propulsion
Diesel-electric: two Caterpillar 3516 HD diesels of 2,000 kW each drive two Wärtsilä Icepod azimuth thrusters of 1,750 kW each; bollard pull 36.3 tonnes. The propellers can be changed afloat by shifting ballast forward to lift the stern
Speed
12.5 kn cruising and 14 kn maximum at half load (Boat International, 2023) 10 kn cruising and 13 kn maximum in the SuperYacht Times profile and the 2026 charter listing; 8 kn cruising and 10 kn top speed in SuperYacht Times in 2021
Range
About 6,000 nm at cruising speed; no source gives the exact speed for this figure 4,800 nm in the SuperYacht Times profile; over 7,000 nm in the 2026 charter listing
Fuel and water
367,000 litres of fuel and 95,000 litres of fresh water
Stabilisation
No fins: a passive U-shaped anti-roll tank in the garage, because the former working ship's metacentric height of 5.8 m gave a short, stiff roll
Helicopter
One certified helideck aft, rated for an Airbus EC145 (ACH145), with a refuelling station. A helicopter garage with a lifting floor was considered and dropped; the space under the deck holds tenders and toys
Cranes
The ship's original deck cranes of 10 and 5 tonnes, used to launch and recover the tenders and toys
Tenders and toys
As Ragnar (2020–2022): an 8.9 m Marell tender for ice conditions, two Ribeye tenders, four jet skis, a Ripsaw EV2 amphibious tracked vehicle, a BigBo amphibious ATV, four snowmobiles and four quad bikes, six Seabobs, heli-ski gear and a heated ski room. As Q (2026 charter listing): a 16.5 m Viking sportfisher (on request), an 8.5 m Silverback beach-landing tender, an 8.1 m Ribeye, a 7.1 m Williams jet tender, a 4.5 m rescue boat, four Sea-Doos, six Seabobs and gear for ice excursions
Submersible
As Ragnar, a three-seat submarine carried in the garage under the helideck; it is not in the 2026 charter toy list
Where she has been
After sea trials off the Netherlands in May 2020 she went north past Orkney to Iceland on her shakedown cruise, then to Malta, her port of registry, by August 2020. She was in the Maldives in January 2021 and in Viareggio in May 2021. Her charter broker planned a winter 2021–22 season out of Tromsø, Norway; in March 2022 she was in Narvik, where local suppliers refused to sell her fuel after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A 2021–2023 plan for a world voyage via Antarctica and the Northwest Passage was published as charter advertising; no report confirms it was sailed
Refits
A 2025 refit as Q added a 4 m extension of the swim platform and a new interior by Zuretti Design. The World Superyacht Awards 2026 list Q among rebuilt yachts with Royal Niestern Sander, Icon Yachts, Astilleros de Mallorca and Zuretti Design

Questions

What makes Ragnar an explorer yacht?
She is a converted icebreaking support vessel: as Sanaborg she was designed to keep going at 4 knots in 0.6-metre ice, with two Wärtsilä Icepod thrusters and a bollard pull of 36.3 tonnes (Conoship International). Icon Yachts added a certified helideck, a garage for tenders, amphibious vehicles and a submarine, and her range is given as about 6,000 nautical miles (Boat International, Boat International).
What ice class does Ragnar have?
Her exact notation is not published. Press reports call her hull “Ice Class 1A Super”, “ICE Class A1 super” or “ICE Class A1”, and her naval architect says she was converted to Polar Code rules (“Polar code 5”), but she does not appear in the public LR, DNV or BV registers (SuperYacht Times, Boat International, Conoship International).
Is Ragnar now called Q?
Yes. She was sold in July 2023, renamed Q and refitted in 2025, when her swim platform was extended by 4 metres and she got a new interior by Zuretti (Boat International, Worth Avenue Yachts). Her length is now given as 72.45 metres (Boat International).
Can Ragnar carry a helicopter?
Yes. She has one certified helideck for an Airbus EC145 with a refuelling station, but no helicopter hangar (Boat International, SuperYacht Times).
Where has Ragnar been?
Her shakedown cruise in 2020 took her to Iceland, and she was reported in Malta that summer, the Maldives in January 2021 and Viareggio in May 2021 (Boat International, SuperYacht Times, SuperYacht Times, SuperYacht Times). In March 2022 she was in Narvik, Norway, where suppliers refused to sell her fuel (Fortune).
Can you charter Ragnar?
Yes, as Q: she is listed for charter for 12 guests by Worth Avenue Yachts (Worth Avenue Yachts). As Ragnar she was offered for charter through Burgess from 2020 (Boat International).
